Title: “ABA On Trial:  A True Tale of Deception, Denial and Redemption as Told by an Expert Witness”

Presenter: Jon S. Bailey, Ph.D., BCBA-D

Abstract: In this presentation, Dr. Bailey discusses a case in Miami in which two plaintiffs with autistic children challenged a ruling by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (FAHCA) that ABA was “experimental” and, therefore, not eligible for funding.  Dr. Bailey was called in as an Expert Witness and worked with a team of lawyers from Florida Legal Services, Inc. to testify in the case. Together, they critiqued the state’s method of review and documents and presented the case for ABA as a proven, evidence-based method of treatment.  In his presentation, Dr. Bailey describes the “evidence” that is often used against ABA and the scientific data that was presented to the Federal Judge in rebuttal of the FAHCA determination.

Target Audience: Psychologists and Behavior Analysts

Learning Outcomes:

At the conclusion of the training, viewers will be able to:

1.         Describe the method that AHCA used to discredit ABA and justify not funding behavioral treatment.

2.         Discuss how Dr. Bailey’s peer review system played an important part in the trial outcome

3.         Describe key features of ABA that establish it as a “proven” method of treatment.

Title: “Five Pillars of Professionalism”

Presenter: Jon S. Bailey, Ph.D., BCBA-D

Abstract: The profession of Behavior Analysis has its roots in the operant conditioning lab which is a strange place to begin if you want to compete with counseling, clinical psychology, psychotherapy, and clinical social work for the hearts and minds of America.  We have not had a foundation for the profession which is grounded in a broader view of what we have to offer parents, teachers, administrators and CEOs as an option to traditional services.  In this presentation, Dr. Bailey suggests that we begin that exercise by considering five major themes that can be employed to bring out the best in the next generation of professional behavior analysts and compete effectively in the marketplace of ideas.

Target Audience: Psychologists and Behavior Analysts

Learning Outcomes:

At the conclusion of the training, viewers will be able to:

1.         Define the key attributes of a professional in any field.

2.         Give examples of the professionals that we would like to use as benchmarks for the field of ABA.

3.         Describe the five pillars of professionalism that have been proposed for ABA.

Title: “Ethics and Values”

Presenter: Jon S. Bailey, Ph.D., BCBA-D

Abstract: Behavior Analysts who are Board Certified now have Guidelines for Responsible Conduct that clearly define our ethical responsibilities to our clients, students, colleagues, society, and to the field of behavior analysis itself. Because we are in constant competition  with other professions who work hard to sell their “values” (almost in lieu of an effective technology of behavior change), Dr. Bailey believes it is critical that we address our own values. In a survey of leaders in ABA, we found that the question, “What values are important for our field?” yielded a diverse range of responses from “empiricism” to “logic” to “induction” and “save the world through BF Skinner”, none of which are likely to appeal to consumers.  In this presentation, Dr. Bailey attempts to offer some guidelines for the development of a set of values statements for behavior analysis that will appeal to advocates and consumers in autism, education, rehabilitation, and community treatment.

Target Audience: Psychologists and Behavior Analysts

Learning Outcomes:

At the conclusion of the training, viewers will be able to:

1.         Distinguish between ethics and values.

2.         Describe core values for the field of behavior analysis.

3.         Discuss the long-term vs. short-term consequences for ethical conduct.
